We are passionate about Jesus, each other, our children (Axel, Sia & Ziya), the Church and our community of South Park, DTLA. 

God put South Park on our hearts in December of 2017 and since moving here in March of 2018, we have witnessed firsthand massive amounts of growth and gospel opportunity in our community. Downtown has been and continues to be the fastest growing part of LA and South Park specifically, is the fastest growing part of Downtown. That growth has revealed various challenges and opportunities that local residents and business owners feel immensely.

So why plant a church in Downtown Los Angeles? 

Many people give us a mix of puzzled and concerned looks when we tell them that we are planting a church in Downtown Los Angeles. The prevailing thought is “isn’t there a better, more convenient, safer and overall easier place to plant a church?”

Historically in the US, the church has avoided “tough urban environments” like ours because of its difficult conditions and high financial costs. Despite it being a place where a significant amount of the population is. Over the past several years, the Lord has cultivated in us willing hearts to joyfully fight, in and by His Spirit, to plant a life giving church that has strong roots in our downtown community. 

We love our city because God loves our city and we are passionate about our community because Jesus is passionate about our community. Our heart is to reach our community with the gospel and to be a church that faithfully reflects the light of Christ to those who are lost in darkness and who do not know the true light of Jesus. 

So the most simple answer to the question of why downtown? Is because God has given us a clear sense of call to plant here. He has shown us many times throughout the years, through His church, its people and the needs of our city that PHŌS CHURCH has been commissioned by God for such a time as this and in such a place as this. In His kindness, God has used seeing the values, hopes, pains, fears and ailments of the people we are trying to reach who reside here to confirm not only the call to plant a church, but the call to plant the church here in downtown. 

We believe that the local church is far more important to the Christian life than many Christians today perhaps realize and that local churches grow in life and vitality as we organize our lives around God’s Word and yield to His Spirit. God’s Word speaks and His Spirit illuminates, our heart in turn is to be a church that listens, follows and obeys His standard and direction. A church that reflects His love and holiness, showcasing His glory. We believe PHŌS CHURCH will look and operate as Jesus’ body as we surrender, submit and listen to Him, who is our Head. 

Christ is King, and this is His church. He will build it. What a joy we have in getting to steward it for His glory and the good of our city. Would the Lord enable us to cultivate a community that treasures Christ together.

We are thankful for those who have gone before us and are humbled by God’s calling to plant a church here.
